Per gran parte dei suoi venti e all’inizio dei trent’anni è riuscita a vivere all’estero, preferendo spesso posti che iniziano con la B: Bruxelles, Belo Horizonte, Brighton e Boston, tra gli altri.
Dal 1995 vive a Londra, dopo aver rinunciato alla sua carriera da antropologa demografica per prendersi cura delle sue figlie e scrivere. Vive a una distanza facilmente percorribile in bici dal centro di Londra con suo marito, il loro gatto e una lavatrice per invogliare le sue figlie ormai cresciute a tornare. La Sarta di Parigi è il suo romanzo di debutto.
